You’re not going fast enough!
Just writing that statement puts my body in a state of stress. I feel everything inside me tighten up every so slightly. But fast enough for who?
I recently saw a video where a guy commented that “I get up at 3am and do a full day’s work until 8am. Then I start my next day at 8am and do another full day’s work until 3pm. My 3rd day starts at 3pm and I work until 9pm. I’ve done 3 full days of work by the end of my day. What have you done in that time? You’ve only got 1 day’s work done. I am doing 3 days for every one day that you do”.
If you’re stressed out contemplating how you would do that in your day I am with you.
This guy hustles. He has goals he wants to achieve and he is putting in the work. I think we would all agree that putting in the work is important. I too have been caught up in the need to work long hours.
However recently my views on this have changed. It changed because I asked myself this question. Why do I need to arrive at my destination so quickly?
If my priorities are changing (read my last blog post on that here). Why do I need to get there so quickly? What will I gain by making my millions in 5 years instead of in 3 years?
When I allow myself to consider that I might not need to “arrive” as quickly as I thought I did, I find my insides relax. That tightening you felt when you begin reading this suddenly loosens.
It’s actually ok to arrive later than you anticipated.
Does this mean we don’t work hard? Absolutely not! It just means that I don’t have to be 100% switched on all the time. It means I can pause completing something so I can enjoy my life.
There is a fine balance between using this as an excuse to avoid tackling a challenge and taking some much needed rest but I am very confident that you know the difference between the two.
So take this message as an opportunity to reevaluate what’s driving you. If it’s purely just so you can arrive sooner and you are missing out on the joys of today give yourself permission to slow down. Now those voices on the social media channels will still be there telling you how to fit multiple days into one day (how is that even possible? That math ain’t mathing for me!) but shut those out and go on your own journey.
